Bowls Club Inc.
The Nightcliff Bowls Club Inc. was formally opened at these premises in June 1984 with the Club playing the first 2 years before this out of the Darwin Club.
Its genesis originated with a partnership with Nightcliff Sports Club Inc. as one of the Articles of Association for the Sports Club was the establishment of a lawn bowls green and Club. This was a basic plank of the Sports Club obtaining the current land plus that allocated to bowling greens.
By the late 1970s as nothing had occurred in constructing a bowling green, the Darwin City Council gave the Sports Club two months to commence this work. This was completed with two greens pegged instead of the original agreed one green. Thus commenced work on the Nightcliff Bowls Club greens.
Formal opening was performed by the Minister of Community Development, Mr Nick Dondas MLA, and his Honour the Administrator of the Northern Territory, Commodore Erie Eugene Johnson OBE, AM, CSt.J on 24th June 1984.
Nightcliff Bowls Club at this time supported two bowls clubs Nightcliff Ladies and Nightcliff Men's Bowling Clubs. These were later merged into a single entity by 2001 with 2008 seeing our first combined ladies/men's Pennant season in the Darwin Region.
The Bill Rowland Green is named after the late Bill Rowland, who was instrumental in donating his equipment and time during 1983 and 1984. Bill continued since that time to sponsor the Bowls Club and its event although he has never played the sport himself.
Our continued and longest term sponsor, our mother club, the Nightcliff Sports Club, whp have maintained and assisted the Bowls Club where ever possible. We currently operate under a plan of Financial Management with the Sports Club, which has facilitated the running of our facilities and their maintenance.
This partnership have been enough for us to host the Arafura Games, a recent Australian Sides Championships and in 2014 the Australian Under 18s Championships.
Since the initial work on our greens and approximately 23 years of hard use the Club management began investigation greens replacement in 2007.
Options considered were to replace the grass greens with turf or to look for a suitable alternative.
By the 2008 Annual General Meeting it was determined by that investigation of artificial surfaces should proceed and a decision to complete this work should be managed by the Club’s Committee.
Following an interstate trip of investigation by two committee members 3-4 alternatives were presented to the Committee who, on behalf of the members, decided to proceed with the ProGrass’ DryMax Pro option and work was scheduled to commence following the 2009 Nightcliff Bowls Carnivals.
A DryMax Pro surface was laid in September of 2009 with the job being completed by the first week in October that year.
Since 2009 we have enjoyed all year, all weather lawn bowls. Our visitor numbers have grown since this time , as word gets around from past visitors.
Nightcliff Bowls Club Inc. thanks the work of Graeme Munro, a Life Member and our coach, for the provision of this historical detail.
